Sizing a furnace for this county is not a generic exercise. Homes in Aroostook County, ME run heat about ten months a year, from September through June. The burner, the heat exchanger, and the ignition system cycle through nearly every month of the calendar, and a system that is undersized for the actual load burns through those components faster than its rated service life suggests it should. A contractor quoting a replacement here has to run a proper load calculation against the house as it stands, because an install that is off by even a modest margin has almost no off-season to hide in.

Ductwork laid down for an earlier furnace rarely lines up cleanly with what a new one needs. Half the homes in Aroostook County, Maine were built in 1972 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That history shows up in trunk sizes, branch runs, and return configurations that were designed around equipment long since replaced, and a contractor installing a furnace today has to assess whether what is in the walls will carry the new system before settling on anything else. The electrical service gets the same look. What the house already contains is the first problem on the job.

What Gets Installed With a New Furnace

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms, a furnace unit with connected ductwork, and a flue pipe extending through the dark shingled roof.

The furnace itself sits in a basement, utility room, or closet and is the heart of what a contractor puts in. A new installation also includes the flue or vent pipe that runs from the furnace to the outside, carrying combustion gases out of the house. The air handler cabinet, if separate, mounts nearby.

The thermostat goes on an interior wall where it can read the home's air accurately, and wiring runs between it and the furnace to carry the signals that start and stop each heating cycle. A contractor also installs or replaces the filter housing and the supply and return plenums where the ductwork meets the unit.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to this house.
